Gospel Principles (New Edition)

The Revised Gospel Principles Manual

Sunday Use of Gospel Principles

This book provides an overview of gospel principles. It was revised in 2009. It is used for personal study and for the Gospel Principles class during Sunday School. In 2010 and 2011 it will be used for Melchizedek Priesthood and Relief Society instruction on the second and third Sundays of each month.

Sunday Use of Gospel Principles
Since 1998 the lesson manual for the second and third Sundays in Melchizedek Priesthood quorums and Relief Society classes has been Teachings of Presidents of the Church. In 2010–2011 these classes will study the newly revised Gospel Principles manual. In 2012 the study of teachings of latter-day prophets will resume in these classes. The revised Gospel Principles manual will also be used in the Gospel Principles class taught each week to investigators and new members during Sunday School. There will be little if any overlap between this class and the Melchizedek Priesthood and Relief Society classes. The Melchizedek Priesthood and Relief Society instructors teach the chapters sequentially on the second and third Sundays of each month while teachers preparing for the Gospel Principles Sunday School class teach the chapters in the order that will best meet the needs of those they teach.
Why the Change
Since the Church began using the Teachings of Presidents of the Church books, millions of new members have joined the Church. Many of them have limited experience in the Church and will benefit greatly by learning about the fundamental principles and doctrines of the gospel from the Gospel Principles manual. Experienced Church members will also benefit from a study of the basics for two years.
Individual and Family
Use Members can use the book as a personal study guide to understand core principles and doctrines of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. With the new teaching aids, questions, and notes for teachers, parents can also use the manual to teach their children these doctrines in the home.
Revisions
• The new edition has a cover to match the style of the Teachings of Presidents of the Church volumes.
• All the visuals are in color.
• Many of the quotations and source citations have been updated to link this manual with the Teachings of Presidents of the Church volumes.
• The Introduction has been updated and simplified. The instructions for teaching from the manual are based on four principles found in Teaching, No Greater Call:
Love those you teach.
Teach by the Spirit.
Teach the doctrine.
Invite diligent learning.

• Each chapter contains one or two notes that can help improve teaching. The notes are related to the four principles from Teaching, No Greater Call.
• Questions that begin each section in a chapter direct members to the content within the chapter. Questions that follow each section help members ponder and apply what they have read. When teachers use the questions during class, they will encourage class discussion.
• Some changes were made to the text to clarify Church policies, principles, and doctrines.
