Church Creates 'Introduction to Mormons' Videos

SALT LAKE CITY —

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has created a series of videos to provide an introduction to the Church, its members, and its various programs and organizations. This type of introductory information has often been requested by members of the media and public as they have become more familiar with the Church in recent years.
The four- to 10-minute segments feature members of the Church discussing their experiences, beliefs and practices, providing answers to common questions about the Church. They are a resource for anyone seeking to share or learn more about what Mormons believe.
The longest video is an overview segment, “The Church at a Glance”; other pieces focus on topics including humanitarian efforts, beliefs, missionary work, temples, family, education and Church history and organization. Videos similar to these have been produced by the Church in the past. Long-term plans include translation and customization of these resources for worldwide use.

Read the Tribute “A Great Man” in Honor of the Prophet’s 86th Birthday

President Thomas S. Monson observed his 86th birthday on August 21. The following is a tribute from one of his longtime friends and associates, Elder Glen L. Rudd, who served in the Quorums of the Seventy from 1987-1992. While President Monson and Elder Rudd, 91, were not in the same circle of friends as young boys, they became acquainted and formed a lasting friendship as they served as young bishops at the same time. They worked closely together, particularly through the Church welfare program, as they helped meet the needs of members in their wards.

Utah missionary dies after being hit by car in Malaysia

SALT LAKE CITY — A Utah man serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints died Sunday after being hit by a car while riding his bike in Kuching, Malaysia, church officials said.
Elder Jason Reid Wiberg, 19, of Roy, had been serving as a full-time missionary in the Singapore Mission since October 2012, LDS Church spokeswoman Ruth Todd said.
"We are deeply saddened by Elder Wiberg's passing, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and fellow missionaries during this difficult time," Todd said.
In a statement released by Elder Wiberg's parents, Reid and Janice Wiberg, they said his missionary work will continue in life after death.
"Jason's organs were donated for transplant so he can continue to help and be with the people of Malaysia he so dearly loved," his parents said.

"Young Women" - It is your choice - Message from YW General President

Youth must learn to recognize, rely on influence of Holy Ghost
Published: Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013

In February of 1847, Brigham Young reported to the brethren who were with him at Winter Quarters, Neb., that Joseph Smith had appeared to him in a dream the night before and given him a message.
The first time I heard this story, my thoughts began to race. What profound message would the martyred Prophet of the Restoration have for the new leader of the Church? Thousands of dispossessed Saints were spread across the plains from eastern Iowa to Winter Quarters and were experiencing dire conditions. They had been living on the open prairie for months and suffering starvation, exposure and illness.
I tried to imagine the most important piece of advice Joseph Smith would have to offer his distressed people from his now expanded viewpoint from the other side of the veil. The message he delivered was unexpected to me, but profound. He said: "Tell the people to be humble and faithful, and be sure to keep the Spirit of the Lord, and it will lead them right. Be careful and not turn away the small still voice; it will teach you how to do and where to go. ... Tell the people to be sure to keep the Spirit of the Lord and follow it, and it will lead them just right" (Brigham Young, vision, Feb. 17, 1847, in Brigham Young Office Files, 1832–1878, archives of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Salt Lake City, Utah).

Words for You to Ponder Today

Labor Day 2013

Labor Day is a U.S. holiday observed on the first Monday in September. The day celebrates the economic and social contributions of workers.

2012September 3
2013September 2

2015September 7
2016September 5
The holiday tributes the working class contributions to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.
Labor Day became an official national holiday in 1894. This holiday is usually celebrated with summer activities - swimming, camping, picnics, etc. Labor Day is the unofficial end of summer in the Northern part of the U.S. Most schools usually start sometime during the week after Labor Day.
Elementary teachers use this holiday to introduce the concept of Community Helpers to small children. In an ideal society - everyone plays a role, or works a job that supports the community.
