Stephen R. Covey

Popular author Stephen R. Covey, who gained fame with the bestselling book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” and motivational speaker died last Monday, July 16th, 2012.
Most of us can remember him in Firesides and  leaderships training. His name is synonymous with leadership in the business world. I'm following him for many years.
Funeral services were held today,  Saturday  21, 2012. at the UCCU Center at Utah Valley University.
All of Covey's works are great for yesterday, for today and for tomorrow!
One of my favorites motivational speech  by Stephen Covey is: Five Emotional Cancers. Take a look and see if you agree with me!

He believed that leadership was the application of principle in life. (For him) it was never how to get ahead by stepping on others. It was how to get ahead by lifting others.”(Lane Beattie, president and chief executive officer of the Salt Lake Chamber)

Celebrating Father's Day in Brazil!

In Brazil Father's Day (Dia dos Pais, in Portuguese) celebrated 3 months after Mother's Day, on the second Sunday of August.
A publicist Sylvio Bhering in the mid-1950s selected the date in honor of Saint Joaquin, patriarch of family (as well as the Catholic day of godfathers). It is not an official holiday , but it is widely observed and typically involves spending time with and giving gifts to one's father.
Here is an idea for father's gift inexpensive, simple and cute:

The Politc and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints

Political Neutrality

The Church’s mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ, not to elect politicians. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is neutral in matters of party politics. This applies in all of the many nations in which it is established.
The Church does not:
  • Endorse, promote or oppose political parties, candidates or platforms.
  • Allow its church buildings, membership lists or other resources to be used for partisan political purposes.
  • Attempt to direct its members as to which candidate or party they should give their votes to. This policy applies whether or not a candidate for office is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
  • Attempt to direct or dictate to a government leader.
The Church does:
  • Encourage its members to play a role as responsible citizens in their communities, including becoming informed about issues and voting in elections.
  • Expect its members to engage in the political process in an informed and civil manner, respecting the fact that members of the Church come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences and may have differences of opinion in partisan political matters.
  • Request candidates for office not to imply that their candidacy or platforms are endorsed by the Church.
  • Reserve the right as an institution to address, in a nonpartisan way, issues that it believes have significant community or moral consequences or that directly affect the interests of the Church.
In the United States, where nearly half of the world’s Latter-day Saints live, it is customary for the Church at each national election to issue a letter to be read to all congregations encouraging its members to vote, but emphasizing the Church’s neutrality in partisan political matters.

The LDS Church Official Response to Businessweek Cover

The Church and Its Financial Independence
SALT LAKE CITY — July 12, 2012
The growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from a fledgling band of frontier Americans to a global faith that blesses the lives of millions is one of the great religious success stories of the 19th and 20th centuries.
From the very beginning, members of the Church displayed a remarkable ability to set aside material things for spiritual goals. One of the earliest Church members, Martin Harris, mortgaged his farm to pay for the publication of the Book of Mormon. Other examples of self-sacrifice among the early Latter-day Saints abound. Family Home Evening

Since 1915, the family home evening program, established by Church leadership, has encouraged Latter-day Saint parents to build and strengthen family relationships. Today, “family home evenings” are generally held weekly on Monday nights.
  • A typical family home evening begins and ends with a prayer and usually includes singing, scripture reading, a short lesson on a religious or practical topic, and refreshments. Or, instead of a lesson, the family might participate in a service project or join in an activity together. Family home evenings are geared to involve all members of the family.
  • The Church provides family home evening materials, lesson outlines and suggestions to help families of all faiths plan and implement this weekly time together.

Hyde Park Chapel Visitors' Centre in London

The iconic Hyde Park chapel in London has been remodeled in preparation for the long-awaited London Olympics, which will likely bring several guests to this visitors' center. As part of the promotion of the visitors' center, anew Facebook page has been created. The page includes pictures, updates and an extensive timeline with the history of the Church in the region. The impressive timeline includes pictures of pioneer missionaries in England, significant events, as well as historic visits. A video showing a brief history of the Church in the British Isles was recently posted on their Facebook page.

What have prophets said about kissing?

  • Firmly establish personal standards. Choose a time of deep spiritual reflection, when there is no pressure on you, and you can confirm your decisions by sacred impressions. Decide then what you will do and what you will not do to express feelings. The Spirit will guide you. Then do not vary from those decisions no matter how right it may seem when the temptation comes…The realization of your dreams depends upon your determination to never betray your standards”
